How to Use Router Bit to Mortise Hinges
- 1). Place the door in a door stand to stabilize it.
- 2). Put your measuring tape against the top of the jamb and measure the distance to the top and bottom of each hinge. Mark out the hinges on the door. Subtract 1/8 of an inch for the gap between the top of the door and the jamb. The measurements must be exact so double-check them.
- 3). Set the hinge jig settings to the hinge size and door thickness. Each jig is a little different, but all of them are adjustable.
- 4). Set your router to a depth equal to the thickness of the hinge. Depending on your hinge jig, you will need either a sleeve screwed to the bottom of your router used to glide along the template, or a router bit with a barring attached to it.
- 5). Set a hinge on edge and on your pencil marks, center the hinge jig and drive the pins into the door to hold it in place.
- 6). Rout out the door by sliding the router along the perimeter of the jig and back and forth in the middle until all the material is removed. Do not cut too fast or you may damage the door. Move the hinge jig to the next hinge and repeat.
