What Do You Mark a White T-Shirt With Before Decorating?

    Fabric Marker

    • Water-soluble fabric markers are available in a variety of colors -- most often purple -- so you can see any design you make on a plain white T-shirt. This type of marker is specially designed to make marks that either fade away after 24 hours or wash out in water, depending on what kind of use you have in mind for your shirt. Often, these markers come in thin widths, so they can be limiting if you need a thicker line.

    Tinted Chalk Pencils

    • Tinted chalk pencils come in a variety of widths and colors, making them a viable option if you want to make a mock-up design on your shirt before you commit to a more permanent art medium. The chalk washes out with water, either by hand or in the laundry.

    Regular Pencil

    • A regular pencil, when used with a light, careful hand, works in a pinch -- especially if you plan on using it under an area you'll be decorating later with dark or colorful paints. Find one with a dull, rounded lead, and use light, feathery strokes.

    Tracing Wheel and Paper

    • A tracing wheel and carbon paper are optimum choices if you want to trace a detailed design onto your shirt. The tracing wheel is serrated, so when you run it over the design, the carbon paper leaves a series of dots directly on the T-shirt in the shape of your design. The method is simple: Place the carbon paper underneath the design with the coated side against the fabric, and use the wheel to trace the design, which will leave the design on the shirt.
