DIY: Installation of a Toilet Flange
- 1). Turn the water supply shutoff valve clockwise to turn the water off. Flush the toilet to remove water in the tank. Remove water remaining in the tank with a sponge.
- 2). Disconnect the supply line on the bottom of the toilet tank. Remove the caps on the base of the toilet. Unscrew the nuts on the bolts with a wrench and remove them.
- 3). Rock the toilet from side to side to break the seal. Lift the toilet straight up and set it aside.
- 4). Inspect the flange for visible damage. If the flange is broken or cracked, place the edge of a chisel beneath it and tap it with a hammer to separate it from the drain pipe. Use a crowbar to pry it loose and remove it.
- 5). Place the new flange over the drain pipe and trace around the edges with a marker. If the flange is not level, remove tiles inside the marks with a chisel and hammer.
- 6). Press a rubber gasket onto the flange with the tapered edges facing down. Place a brass ring over the gasket and use a hammer to tap it down.
- 7). Tighten the screws that secure the flange to the floor with a ratchet wrench. Insert two closet bolts in the slots in the flange.
- 8). Place a new wax ring on the flange. Lift the toilet up over the closet bolts and align the holes on the base with the bolts. Lower the toilet over the bolts and press down firmly to seat the wax ring.
- 9). Put a plastic base, brass washer and a nut on each bolt. Tighten each nut one turn. Continue tightening the nuts in this manner until they are tightened. Cut the bolts with a hacksaw.

Reconnect the supply line to the tank. Turn the shutoff valve counterclockwise to turn on the water supply and allow the tank to fill. Flush the toilet and check for leaks around the base. If there is a leak around the base, tighten each bolt one-quarter turn. Snap the plastic covers over the bolts.
