How to Install a Genie Garage Door Opener
- 1). Build the main assembly. Attach the bumper to the power head. Begin by attaching the first section of rail to the power head. Attach the second and then the third rail to the first. When attaching the rail sections, make sure that the stamped arrows are facing away from the power head. Engage the hooks between rail sections and slide the locking coupling into place at each section. For a detailed description of the hooks, refer to page 12 of your installation manual. Install the carriage stop and carriage into the assembled rail. Complete the main assembly by installing the close and open switches to the rail.
- 2). Locate the header bracket. Measure the total length of the garage door. Divide the measurement by two to find the door's center. Measure in from one end of the garage door. Place a pencil mark near the top of the door. Extend the pencil mark by holding the level vertically against the line. When the level is plumb (vertically level), draw a line extending down the garage door 12 to 18 inches.
- 3). Open the garage door to find the highest point of travel. Prop the door up at its highest point. Measure the top corner of the door while the door is open. Close the door. Measure up from the floor at the garage door's centerline and place a pencil mark on the wall. Measure up 2-1/2 inches from the highest point mark and place a pencil mark there as well. The garage door centerline mark and the mark 2-1/2 inches above the highest point will be the final location of the header bracket.
- 4). Align the flange of the header bracket with the garage door centerline and the top of the header bracket with the 2-1/2 inch mark over the highest opening point. Mark the mounting holes on the wall with the pencil. Drill a 5/32-inch hole at each pencil mark. Fasten the header bracket with three lag screws using the ratchet and the 7/16-inch socket. Attach the rail assembly to the header bracket.
- 5). Mount the power head to the garage ceiling. The power head should be mounted level or slightly below level to operate properly. Install the perforated angle to the ceiling in line with the garage door centerline. Hang the power head from the perforated angle.
- 6). Attach the door bracket to the garage door. The door bracket needs to be mounted on the centerline of the garage door and as high on the garage door as possible. Refer to the installation instruction manual for photos and a detailed description of the door bracket.
- 7). Install the Genie Safe-T-Beam to the vertical framing of the garage door opening. Measure off the floor five inches and place a mark on the framing. Center the bracket on your mark and fasten the bracket to the wall with the screws that come with the sensor. Repeat the procedure for the sensor on the other side of the garage door. Wire the sensors to the power head.
