How To Make A Crowd Pleasing Cake
Using cake decorating molds is the single best way to make a dessert for any occasion whether it is a birthday party, themed party or holiday. In order to make the most visually appealing cakes, using a cake mold along with food coloring for the icing and interesting toppings is a sure way to make a crowd-pleasing dessert.
There are several ways to use a cake mold to capture any imagination. At a child's birthday party, for example, molds in the shape of a cartoon character are great for kids. After baking the cake, use different food coloring to turn the icing into the colors you need to resemble the character. For example, pick Mickey Mouse and use black food coloring for his body, tan for his face, white for the hands, yellow for the shoes and red for the shorts. Then, either use candy for his face or use black and white icing to form his eyes, nose and mouth. Animal molds are also fantastic for children's birthday parties. One of my child's favorite cakes was in the shape of a pig where pink food coloring was used. I used candy (M&Ms) for its facial features and it was a hit!
Themed parties are another great opportunity for using cake decorating molds. For example, for the Super Bowl, use a rectangular cake pan. Then use green food coloring to turn the icing green and draw white lines resembling those on a football field. Decorate the end zones with the names and colors of both teams and you have a fantastic cake!
Holidays are one of my favorite uses for cake decorating molds. For Halloween, I have a pumpkin mold. I bake a carrot cake and then use orange food coloring to make the icing for the pumpkin orange and then use green coloring to make the stem green. It looked great!
There are endless possibilities for Christmas as well. Two of my favorites are the Santa mold and reindeer mold. For Easter, a hit among the kids (and always the adults too) is the Bunny mold. Keep the icing white, and then cover it with shredded coconut. Use colorful candy for the bunny's face.
In addition, there are cake molds available that allow you to make several miniature cakes (e.g. Easter eggs). This is great because it allows you to decorate each one differently. This looks great when you place all of them on the same platter afterwards. It can really showcase your creativity.
The most important thing about cake decorating and using cake molds is to have fun and let yourself be creative!
