If you are looking to start a flower garden but want to keep it simple, you may want to start with an annual garden.
Annuals offer a wide variety of color, but live only one growing season.
They are easy to maintain and easy to plant, as long as you follow a few simple steps.
So explore the following steps and learn how easy you can start your own annual garden.
Begin by digging a hole that is twice the width of your pot or cell packet that the annual is in, and twice the depth.
Next, add loose soil to the bottom of your hole so when you place the plant in the hole it will sit even with the ground.
The loose soil will make it easier for the roots to expand and grow.
After digging the hole, you need to prepare the annual for planting.
The next step to plant your annual is to remove it from the cell packet or pot.
To do this, slowly squeeze the pot or cell packet to loosen the roots and to make them easier to remove.
Next, flip the cell packet or pot upside down.
You may need to gently grasp the stem of the annual and give it a slight tug to enable it to slide out freely.
After the annual is removed, you need to prepare the roots for planting.
If the roots are compacted, take a knife and cut a few slits along the root system to loosen the roots.
Four small slits that are equally spaced around the root system should be plenty to help loosen the roots.
If the roots are extremely compacted, it takes them longer to loosen up and spread out before they can become established.
Once the roots are prepared, you can then place the plant in the hole.
Finally, after the plant is placed in the hole, take a mixture of half peat moss and half soil and fill in around the plant.
The peat moss absorbs the moisture and then slowly releases it when the plant needs it.
Make sure you do not compact the mixture of peat moss and soil too much around the plant, otherwise the roots will not be able to grow properly.
As you can see, it really is quite simple to plant an annual garden.
The tools needed are very minimal and the time spent is enjoyable.
So dig right in and start your annual garden today.
