How to Prune Suckers

    • 1). Dig a hole next to the sucker to expose the area where it is attached to the root flare of the tree. The size of the hole will depend on the age or depth of the tree's root system.

    • 2). Dip a pair of bypass shears into a mixture of 70 percent denatured alcohol (ethanol) and 30 percent water to sterilize the pruning tool. Pruning tools can harbor harmful pathogens; always clean the tool before pruning and between each cut.

    • 3). Cut the sucker flush with the root system, but avoid cutting into the root system itself. Wounded root systems offer the perfect pathway for diseases such as root rot to enter.

    • 4). Replace the dirt back in the hole. Throw away or compost your sucker.

    • 5). Mulch around the tree. Spread a 3- to 4-inch layer 1 inch from the base of the tree out to the drip line. The drip line is the area that is directly beneath the outermost branches. By mulching around the tree, you lock in moisture and help stressed trees.
