How to Repair the Norton Auto-Protect Tool
- 1). Turn off User Account Control if you are running Vista or Windows 7. Go to "Start," then "Control Panel" and click on "User Accounts." Click "Manage User Accounts" and select "Turn User Account Control On or Off." A User Account Control window will prompt you for permission. Click "OK" and turn off User Account Control in the window that appears. Restart your computer.
- 2). Go to Symantec's Auto-Protect fix tool linked below. Initiate the tool where indicated. If you receive a warning banner across the top of your browser window asking if you'd like what you'd like to do with the ActiveX request, click it and select "Download ActiveX Control."
- 3). Restart your computer and open Norton. Check to see that the Auto-Protect problem has been resolved. If you still have the persistent problem of the feature not running even though you have enabled it, go to "Settings" and under "Basic Security" click "Auto-Protect." Select "Configure" and put a check mark beside "Load Auto-Protect Control At Startup." Restart your computer.
- 4). Repeat Step 1 to turn User Account Control back on when the problem is resolved.
