What is a hemroid?

This question is among the frequently asked queries of people suffering from this unpleasant disease.

A hemroid is a painful condition wherein the veins in your anus and lower rectum have swollen. Many factors contribute to this abnormal swelling such as chronic constipation, severe cough, anal intercourse, obesity and childbirth in women.

A person should suspect the onset of hemroids when the following symptoms manifest:

- Pain and burning sensations in the anus are felt when sitting for a prolonged period of time;
- Feeling unrelieved even after a bowel movement;
- Soft lumps are felt in the anal opening;
- The most noticeable symptom is the presence of blood stains in stools and toilet tissue after wiping.

Roughly 50 to 80 percent of the world population has experienced hemroids at least once in their lives and 10 million Americans suffer from this disease every year. A study revealed that symptoms manifesting hemroidal disease are prevalent among Caucasian men and women and those belonging in the higher socio-economic status.

What is internal hemroid?

Internal hemroids are the swelling of veins in the inner rectum. Internal hemorids are not easily detected by the patient because no pain is felt. The reason being, the tissues surrounding the rectal wall have fewer nerves that can send sensations to the brain. When left untreated, the growing lumps are pushed out of the anus and bleed. This time, the patient feels excruciating pain whenever the lumps are accidentally touched or rubbed.

What is external hemroid?

External hemroids are pea-sized lumps around the outer anus. They are dark in color as a result of blood clotting. This type of hemroids is twice as painful as the internal hemroids. If left untreated, the inflamed veins or lumps can complicate and become gangrenous causing excruciating pain and emotional distress to the patient as one is unable to perform in daily normal activities.

What is the cure to hemroid?

A lot of methods of treatment are available online to cure hemroids. Some home remedies are sitz bath therapy, increased fiber and fluid intake, exercise and proper hygiene. For remedies with natural ingredients, there are creams and oils that can be used such as the witch hazel, butter coconut and shark liver oil. All of which are for topical use. There are also some safe over-the-counter drugs that offer temporary pain relief. You can also ask pharmacists for some effective medicinal drugs used by many patients. However, it is safer to take doctor-prescribed pills rather than deciding on your own on which pill to take.

For patients seeking permanent cure from hemroids, there are several surgical procedures that can be performed such as hemorrhoidectomy, sclerotherapy, and infrared coagulation. These procedures are done to permanently remove irritating hemroids. However, this method of treatment can be costly and painful. Hemroid surgery is advised only to patients with severe cases of hemroids.

However you want to treat your hemroids, better consult and ask the opinion of a qualified physician for proper medical advice.
