    • 1). Till the top of soil in the planting area with a rake or rototiller 4 inches deep.

    • 2). Cover the soil with manure or compost and 5-10-10 fertilizer at a rate of 1 lb. per 50 feet.

    • 3). Mix manure/compost and fertilizer evenly into the soil, using a rake or rototiller.

    • 4). Create rows 4 feet apart and elevate the soil into hills about 8 inches high by 2 feet wide.

    • 5). Trim plant roots to 6 inches, then soak the roots in water an hour before planting.

    • 6). Dig holes for the plants that are spaced 12 to 18 inches apart, with holes large enough for roots to spread and deep enough so roots are covered but the crown is not. Place the plants in the holes and pack soil around the roots.

    • 7). Remove runners and flowers until July the first year.

    • 8). Add mulch between plants to keep the soil cool and prevent weeds.

    • 9). Water 1 to 2 inches per week.

Till plants under after the final harvest and prepare beds for next season by fertilizing with a 10-10-10 fertilizer at a rate of 1 lb. per 100 square feet.
