How to Prepare Myself for My Child's First Communion
- 1). Enroll your child in religious education classes. Contact your local Catholic church and register your child for classes, which are usually one night a week through the school year. Christian teachings set a foundation for your child's First Communion.
- 2). Obtain important dates. Your child will proceed through a two-year journey toward First Communion, which generally begins in the first grade. The class educator will send home a list of important dates such as First Penance, a sacrament received prior to First Communion according to the Vatican, and any required parental meetings.
- 3). Set a time during the week for your child's homework. The class may assign a chapter out of a workbook in preparation for the next week's class. Utilizing the workbook and guiding your child through the lessons is important because you will set an example by demonstrating a relationship with your child's religion.
- 4). Select an outfit for your child. First Communion typically requires a white dress and a veil for girls and a jacket, trousers and a tie for the boys.Check with your education class, which should provide guidance on attire.
- 5). Purchase a gift for your child for achieving this sacrament. Gifts can vary widely from small personalized mementos to a piece of jewelry.
- 6). If you are holding a celebration after the ceremony, prepare in advance by making up invitations and ordering food and refreshments, including a cake. Decide how many guests you will have and whether the party will be in your home or at another establishment.
- 7). Attend the First Communion with your child. Arrive early to get a seat because the church will fill up quickly.
