Macules: Small circumscribed changes in the color of skin that are neither raised (elevated) nor depressed. Macules are never large. They are basically little spots or blemishes in the skin. They are entirely flat and can only be appreciated by visual inspection; they cannot be seen from the side. A flat discoloration that can be brown, black, red, or lighter than the surrounding skin. A macule is a change in the color of the skin. It is flat, if you were to close your eyes and run your fingers over the surface of a purely macular lesion, you could not detect it. A macule greater than 1 cm. may be referred to as a patch.

Treatment

Photodynamic therapy (PDT). This therapy is primarily used for treating CNV that's located directly under the fovea. The fovea lies at the center of your macula and in healthy eyes provides your sharpest vision. If conventional hot-laser surgery were used at this location, it would destroy all central vision. PDT increases your chances of preserving some of that vision. It won't bring back any of the vision you have lost, but it may halt the loss of your vision or at least slow down the rate of vision loss.

Cyst

Cyst: These are large pus-filled lesions that are usually present deep within the skin. The cysts are very painful lesions, as they are inflamed. Cysts form as a result of the contents of a comedo spilling over the surrounding skin and due to the response of the local immune system in producing pus. The cysts often leave deep scars.

Treatment

Cystic acne needs to be treated due to the likelihood of additional cysts forming and the propensity for scarring. Dermatologists may elect to drain the lesions if they are severe and offer a course of antibiotics. An alternative treatment is injections of cortisone into the cysts to decrease the inflammatory response. Accutane is used by many dermatologists due to the severe nature of the acne. The teratogenic effects of accutane restrict its use in women of child bearing potential. Therefore, it is crucial that women of childbearing age are not pregnant and do not get pregnant while taking accutane. Women must use an appropriate birth control method for 1 month before therapy begins, during the entire course of therapy, and for 1 full month after therapy stops.

Pustule: These are small round lesions that are inflamed and contain visible pus, which appear red at the base with a yellowish or whitish center. Pustules do not contain a large amount of bacteria. The inflammation is caused by chemical irritation from sebum components such as fatty free acids. Similar to papules, pustules are red, tender bumps with white pus at their tips
