Miscarriage is the term used to describe pregnancy that ended on its own, within its first 20 weeks. Medically, it is also called “spontaneous abortion. In this article, we will share with some helpful information which can help you  through pregnancy and at the same time, lessen your chances of having a miscarriage.

In the United States alone, miscarriage is said to be among the most common causes of pregnancy loss. It is said that approximately 10-25% of clinically recognized pregnancies result to miscarriage with chemical pregnancies accounting about 50-70% of which. A miscarriage occurs if the pregnancy is lost shortly after implantation. This results to bleeding which usually occur about the same time that the woman is expecting her period. In some cases, the women even does not realize that she is pregnancy when she faces chemical pregnancy. More often than not, miscarriage occurs during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. The good news is that having miscarriage before does not increase your chances of having one again in the future. Nevertheless, it is very important that you keep yourself aware about how to avoid the chances of repeat miscarriage. The statistics of repeat miscarriage are as follows:
  • Mothers who have had miscarriage during their first pregnancy have 10-13% chances of having another miscarriage.
  • Mothers who have had one or more successful, healthy live births and one miscarriage in the past have chances of repeat miscarriage is 10%
  • Mothers who have had two pregnancies - with both of which ending in miscarriage- have a 40% chance of having a repeat miscarriage.
  • Mothers who have had one or more live births and no miscarriage have a 13% chance.
  • Mothers who have had three pregnancies – with all of which ending in miscarriage – have a 60% chance of having a miscarriage again in the future.

Most miscarriage occur during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. Soon-to-be mothers should be cautious and sensitive enough about what happens to their body during pregnancy especially about miscarriage symptoms.

Vaginal bleeding is one of the most common miscarriage symptoms. In some cases, the bleeding is accompanied by cramps, like what you feel before and during your period.  About twenty percent of women experience a degree of spotting in the first trimester. Note; however, that not all instances of spotting or bleeding indicates a miscarriage. If you experienced both, take time to see your doctor right away. This can be a sign that a miscarriage is about to occur. Your doctor will conduct an internal examination and check if your service is dilated. He may also conduct an  ultrasound examination and a series of blood tests

Abdominal pain and back pain are also common miscarriage symptoms. Aside from vaginal spotting and bleeding, other women also experience leaking from the vagina, sometimes accompanied with a “clotty” material. If you experience having a “clotty” material, take the specimen to your doctor for further examination.

A miscarriage may be prevented especially if detected during its early stage. If you experience any of the above miscarriage symptoms, restrain from doing rough activities, take a complete bed rest and see your doctor right away.
