How to Choose the Right Bonsai Pot

The right pot for a bonsai completes the overall visual impact of the miniature tree. A wrong pot is not only a distraction; it can also contribute to the difficulty of styling a bonsai tree. Moreover, a bonsai tree may even look out of place in the wrong pot. That means, all the years of bonsai-styling were ruined by the wrong choice of pot.

A bonsai pot is a relatively expensive investment. But it pays off in the long run.

The dimensions of the pot

The depth of the pot must be roughly equal to the trunk diameter above the soil level. Always stick with this rule of thumb. For bonsai trees that possess wide canopies, you need a much wider pot compensated by slightly narrowing the pot depth.

If the pot is either rectangular or oval, then the pot length must be 2/3 of the height of the bonsai tree. If the pot is round, then the pot diameter must be 1/3 of the height of the tree.

The shape of the bonsai pot

The style and shape of the pot must conform to the appearance of the tree. Inspect the characteristics of your bonsai tree. Does it look feminine with those gracefully styled trailing branches? Then choose a feminine-looking oval pot because the tree will most likely look too awkward in a clunky and overpowering pot.

Masculine-looking bonsai trees give an impression of strength €" angular branches, mature bark, tapered trunk, dense canopy, prominent trunk, etc. For example, a pine is a naturally masculine-looking tree.

Feminine-looking bonsai trees have a delicate or a graceful appearance €" smooth trunk, smooth bark, sinuous branches, light canopy, etc. For example, a Japanese maple bonsai is a highly feminine-looking tree.

Choose rectangular pots for coniferous trees and large deciduous trees with a very prominent taper and a wide base. Rectangular pots enhance the €masculine€ features of an angular tree.

Choose oval pots for feminine-looking deciduous trees or group-planting styled trees.

Choose round pots for either coniferous or deciduous feminine-looking trees.

As for pot color, you may want the glaze to pick up on one feature of the tree so that the overall impact of the arrangement is harmonious. In the end, your personal tastes ultimately determine the design, type, and shape of pot that you will get for your tree. The tips above are simply guidelines that are culled from bonsai experts.
