How to Set Up a Movie Soundtrack
- 1). Watch the movie you want to set up for a soundtrack. The film production company will provide you with a rough cut to work with. Make notes to yourself about the overall mood and theme of the film. Highlight special scenes that will require music with lyrics. Clearly mark where your music will begin and end by using the time and date indicator on the rough cut of the movie. This may change after the movie is edited, but your times will be taken into account during the final process.
- 2). Brainstorm with your piano keyboard. Let the movie roll on your computer monitor while you try out some ideas for the action. Keep your notation software open as you experiment. When you hit on an idea you like, take the time to work with it. Mark the location you're composing music for and give it a name--something that indicates the scene in the movie where the music fits. Once you've composed a few ideas, work out a solid composition of the songs.
- 3). Record your soundtrack songs in the order of appearance. Your recorded soundtrack, based on your time stamp notes and composition times, should be recorded separate from the movie. Deliver the soundtrack to the film production company, including a song breakdown sheet that gives song titles, times and positions in the finished movie. Include sheet music to every song as well. The final cut of the movie will incorporate your soundtrack into the film. The actual order and timing will probably vary, depending on the final cut of the film.
