Matthew McConaughey on Balancing Romantic Comedies and Action Dramas: ?I don?t make a conscious decision to make one for the guys, one for the girls. I don?t make a decision like that. But ?Two for the Money? was what I thought was a really cool thriller, drama, and something that I chased down and was able to do. ?How to Lose a Guy? was something that I found some attraction as being a guy in a romantic comedy in that film.

And that worked?and also people went to see it so it did well in the box office, which in a way allowed and helped me do something like a ?Two for the Money.?

Romantic comedies to studios are one thing, [something] that can make them money. They?re accessible by nature. Bring the daughter, bring the sons, mom, dad, bring the kids, the dogs, whatever. It?s accessible. You can look at it and hopefully everyone can get a different laugh out of it and have a good time watching it. It?s fun. Something like a lot of dramas, they look at as less accessible. Plus these are not that, in film terms, that expensive to make comparatively to the large action-adventure, something like that. So the return can be good for them. Plus I now find them very fun to do. I like doing them.?

Finding the Right Comedic Tone for ?Failure to Launch:? ?It?s just standing up for your man, meaning the character. And that?s my job as an actor, to look at my character, what does he do, and stand up for that. That?s my job.

Whatever my man does, it?s to stand up for him and let him believe in what he?s doing and let the comedy come from, for instance, in this movie, let him believe in what he?s doing but let the rest of the world go, ?No, no, no.? And he?s going, ?Yeah, what?s wrong with it?? So there?s where your comedy comes from is when he thinks he?s got a situation handled or under control and it turns out to be something other than what it appeared to be. That?s where the comedy comes from.?

Keeping Relationships in the ?Fun Zone?: McConaughey can relate to his character?s desire to keep relationships in what he calls the fun zone. ?Yeah, I keep it in the fun zone, man. Life?s hard enough, the stuff you?ve got going on. I know if anybody I?m going to spend time with, I want to enjoy it. Now, is fun meaning there?s no hard work? No. Hard work can be fun because you?re evolving. You?re building something with someone. But that can also be fun. Does hard work or commitment mean that it?s got to go deep and down? No. No, no, no. One person said this and it makes a lot of sense, ?How else can love survive if it doesn?t stay buoyant???

McConaughey?s been involved in his fair share of high profile relationships and is currently dating his ?Sahara? co-star Penelope Cruz. Does he consider that relationship still in the fun zone? ?Yeah, very fun place. It?s been almost two years and it?s even more fun than it was.?

Is it tough to keep it fun and fresh after two years? McConaughey says, ?I don't know if it?s necessarily like two years later it?s harder to keep it fun. Sometimes it?s easier to keep it fun because you know the other?s sense of humor. You know what each other likes. And when you can do those things together and you can also appreciate and have fun sort of for the other one, just because you know they?re doing something that they really dig even though you may not physically be there, that?s very important too I believe.?
