Do You Have Decorating Talent? - I Don"t
I am NOT the best decorator.
My mother has incredible talent, but for some reason that genetic code did not pass down to me.
I would estimate that I got about 10% of her decorating skills, which is probably not enough to have a fine looking home.
Her house looks like it came out of Architectural Digest, mine looks like it came off a TV sitcom.
I've seen several people ask similar questions that I have.
I researched them and came up with these responses.
How do you know what your own decorating style is? How do professional decorators do it? Well, this is a two part question.
Your own style is just whatever you think looks nice.
There is right or wrong for this, it's just whatever makes you happy when you see it.
You may try something and hate it, that's OK.
Take it back and get something else.
Professional have a built in sense of what is universally considered beautiful.
There are odd balls of course, but the ones who stay in business are there because they have a gift for color matching, finding items that are the right size for an area, and just knowing instinctively what looks good.
It's OK if you don't think you have that instinct, some of us really don't.
Where do I go for decorating ideas? Magazines are the best, but I also like to browse specialty stores that are known for having great displays set up.
If you like the entire display buy everything they're showing.
Take a picture of the display and use that to recreate it in your home.
As long as you have room for it there's no problem.
