Good Ways to Vent Anger
- Before you let loose on a tirade, get some exercise. Go on a run, a swim or a long bike if possible. Even a brisk 10-minute walk will help you cool down. After exercising, you will be more likely to calmly vent your anger in a healthy way.
- Laughter almost always diffuses anger. If you are feeling hostile, turn on a funny movie or television show and stew in your anger a bit. Focusing on something funny will help you calm down. Once you feel a bit better, feel free to talk to others about your anger and the reasons behind it.
- Vent your anger where no one will see it. Use an old-fashioned paper journal to write all of your angry thoughts and feelings. If you are angry at a specific person, write them a letter that you will never send. It is cathartic to just write it all down; using this method for channeling anger helps you release some anger without causing damage to relationships.
- Talking with the person who you are angry at is a good way to vent anger if you do it calmly and purposefully. Arrange a time to talk or meet with her. Make it clear you are angry and the reasons why. Avoid telling her everything she did wrong. Instead, focus on how her actions made you feel.
