How to Install a Flat Bed on a 1998 S-10
- 1). Remove the steel bed from the truck by first unbolting the bed from the frame, then unbolting the fuel filler neck from behind the gas door. Detach the wiring harness at the cab, but retain the wiring which runs to the brake lights.
- 2). Bolt each 2-by-6-by-6 to the truck's bed mounts using the carriage bolts. They should be perpendicular to the lines of the truck, as they are the supports for the flat bed. This is a temporary installation.
- 3). Lay two of the 2-by-12-by-8 boards at the ends of the 2-by-6 boards to create the ends of the flat bed. These boards will be mounted to the truck over the rear wheels. Use the wood screws to secure them into place.
- 4). Remove the carriage bolts from the support beams, the lay the last four 2-by-12-by-8 boards into the bed. Ensure that these are even, then secure them into place with wood screws.
- 5). Use the 2-by-4-by-6 board to screw to the back of the truck bed. This piece will prevent the bed boards from splintering with use. Bolt the rear brake lights onto the bottom of this board, then reinstall the wiring harness salvaged from the replaced truck bed, securing the wires to the bottom of the truck's new flat bed.
