How to Preserve Lettuce in a Refigerator
- 1). Take apart your head of lettuce. Remove any leaves that have begun to spoil. If you are cutting your lettuce into small pieces, tear the leaves with your hands or use a plastic knife. Do not cut lettuce with a metal knife, as this will cause your lettuce to brown.
- 2). Line a plastic, sealable container with a dish towel or paper towels. Place the leaves on the towel, so that any moisture is absorbed by the towel. Place another towel over the lettuce.
- 3). Seal the container, removing as much air as possible. Place the container in the crisper section of your refrigerator. Make sure the temperature of the compartment is 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Replace the dish towel every few days, with a dry towel to keep moisture at bay.
- 4). Avoid placing other quick-ripening fruits such as apples, apricots and melons next to your lettuce, as these emit ethylene as they ripen. This gas will make your lettuce spoil faster.
