    Function

    • Dietary supplement information is used to designate what a supplement is, what it does, how much should be taken and how often it should be taken. Supplements function as an alternative to conventional medications for diseases, aches, pains and to boost immunity.

    Types

    • Information on supplements comes in a few forms. Pamphlets, flyers, demo tables, DVDs, CDs, informational websites and infomercials are all utilized as a means to promote supplements. Each of these resources target different environments. Flyers and pamphlets are usually handed out at stores where products are sold. They are left near the product for the public to see and to take with them. Sometimes these are accompanied with DVDs and CDs. Demo tables are usually set up at stores that carry the products. They are usually manned by a representative from the company who provides verbal information, samples and any number of the above promotional tools.

    Features

    • Dietary supplements usually have a spokesperson. This is usually the founder of the supplement or a person who is a strong advocate of the product. This promotion includes talks and interviews on how the supplement was created, why it was created and what it has done for the spokesperson. This is often accompanied with written or visual testimonials of other people who have used the supplement with great results.

    Identification

    • As for the characteristics of the actual information on dietary supplements, there is usually a label on the bottle or package. This label lists ingredients, the amounts of ingredients, dosage recommendations and the amount of servings the package contains. It usually has a little synopsis about what the product is supposed to do for the body as well. Often, there is also an FDA label on the bottle with a disclaimer that says the supplement has not been evaluated by the FDA, and that the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. This label is attached because supplements are not regulated.

    Warning

    • It is vitally important to know what supplements do and what effect they could have on the body. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, consumers should be cautious about taking certain supplements such as beta carotene, vitamin A and vitamin E. These are antioxidant supplements, and their benefits are subject to debate.
