Colorful Lawn Weeds
- Spurge is a persistent plant that grows straight up in clumps and bears bright yellow, petal-like bracts, which contain the true flowers. These flowers show in May and the usually bluish-green leaves turn shades of yellow, orange or red in late summer.
- Henbit is a short, upright plant that rarely reaches 1 foot in height. Its pink and purple flowers stand out in green grass, but they often are used in flower arrangements. The purple Deadnettle is a related species, but its foliage appears more red.
- Mushrooms, or toadstools, are the flashy fruits of soil fungi. They most often grow where there is a significant source of organic material on which to feed, such as roots, tree stumps or forgotten wooden boards left on the lawn. Their colors are wide-ranging, depending on the species, and include white, purple, orange and brown.
