Metronidazole is a popular antibiotic which is used to treat sexually transmitted bacterial infections such as bacterial vaginosis (Gardnerella vaginalis) and trichomonas vaginalis. Metronidazole basically inhibits the ability of the bacterium to spread further in your body, leading to a significant decrease in the symptoms and discomfort caused by the infection. If the medication is taken as prescribed, you can cure the infection completely. It has been observed that if you start taking Metronidazole at the onset of the symptoms, it can inhibit the effects of the infection on your overall health.

People who are infected with sexually transmitted bacterial infections are generally able to tolerate this pill, which makes it easier to cure the infection within a short space of time. Metronidazole works by entering each individual protozoa cell and inhibiting the functioning of the cell's DNA. By inhibiting the functioning of the cell's DNA, it completely kills off the bacterium that spreads the infection in your body. With this, it completely inhibits the replication and multiplications of the bacterium cells from spreading further in your body. It in turn provides your body's natural defences with enough strength to fight off the infection.

This medication is available in a versatile range of dosages, prescribed as per the condition of the person. Those who can tolerate high dosages of antibiotic medications can take the pill in the form of one single dosage. Others can also take this medication in lower dosages twice on a daily basis, for up to 7 to 10 days. It is advisable to take the pill either along with your meal or after you have had your meal. If you miss a dose, then you must take the next pill as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dosage, you should not double the dosage.

Although this pill is well tolerated, some Metronidazole users have experienced certain side effects of the pill. Some of the commonly experienced side effects include allergic reactions such as hives; numbness or tingling in your hands or feet; white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips; difficulty in breathing; swelling on your face, lips, tongue or throat; seizures; vaginal itching or discharge; nausea; stomach pain; headache; dizziness; dry mouth or unpleasant metallic taste; fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, flu symptoms; pain or burning sensation during urination; watery or bloody diarrhoea; loss of balance; cough, sneezing, runny or stuffy nose.

People who are suffering from bacterial vaginosis (Gardnerella vaginalis) or trichomonas vaginalis and are above the age of 18 years can take Metronidazole. But those suffering from a liver disease, a stomach or intestinal disease such as Cohn's disease, blood cell disorders such as anaemia or leucopoenia, epilepsy or nerve disorders, should avoid taking this medication. You must also avoid taking this pill if you are pregnant or are breastfeeding. This medication can also interact with other medications that you might be taking, such as lithium, medications for treating epilepsy, to stop blood clotting, disulfiram, cyclosporine and also oral contraceptives such as Yasmin or Cerazette, cimetidine or fluorouracil.
