Making Your Baby's Bed

Making Your Baby's Bed Few things are as sweet as a sleeping baby. You want your baby’s bed to be comfortable, safe, and easy to clean -- messes will happen.

To keep your baby comfortable and safe, don’t put anything in his crib - until he is 12 months old. That means no pillows, no blankets or comforters, no bumper guards, no stuffed animals, or any other toys. All these things increase the risk of suffocation.

Dress your baby warmly enough so she doesn’t need to be covered.

For the easiest cleanup of your baby's crib:
  • On the bottom: Use a waterproof mattress pad.
  • In the middle: Put the fitted crib sheet.
  • On top: Place a waterproof pad/sheet (called a sheet-saver). Be sure to get a sheet-saver that snaps or ties on to the crib railings. Don’t use the ones that you just place on top of the fitted sheet, because they increase the risk of suffocation.

The sheet-saver can quickly and easily be changed when the baby makes a mess.
