How do I Plant the Seeds From a Buckeye Tree?
- 1). Remove the seeds from the husks. This should be done just before you are ready to plant them in order to prevent the seeds from drying out. Buckeye seeds can be collected from the ground around trees from September to early October. Do not be tempted to climb the tree to collect seeds as these may not be ripe.
- 2). Fill plant pots with a layer of broken pots or stones and top up with soil. The broken pots will provide drainage. You may only be planning on growing one tree but there is the possibility that not all of the seeds will germinate. If more seeds germinate than you need, consider giving spare plants to friends and neighbors.
- 3). Plant a single seed 3-inches deep in each pot and water well. You can leave the pots outside covered with chicken wire for protection from squirrels and other rodents, or you can keep them in a potting shed or a cold room in the house. They will not germinate so easily, if at all, if they are too warm. If you choose to keep them outside, ensure that they are in a shady spot when summer comes.
- 4). Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate and then water only when the soil begins to feel dry. Treat with a light fertilizer once a month until August. This will give them time to toughen up for winter.
- 5). Remove the germinated seeds from pots after one to two years, and plant in your chosen spot, staking if necessary.
