    • 1). Cut the sheets of plywood to size to form the two side walls, roof and floor of the coop. Add a back wall if the coop will be freestanding and not against a wall or building.

    • 2). Fix the plywood together with lengths of 2x4 cut to the appropriate lengths to fit along the sides of the floor and vertically at the front and back walls to support the structure. Add a couple of lengths across the floor to support perches and nesting boxes.

    • 3). Cut smaller pieces of plywood and fit into 2x4 supports set vertically from the floor to a height of 18 inches. These will be shelf supports and provide dividers for nesting boxes.

    • 4). Cut doors from both side walls, to give easy access to the perches and nest boxes for cleaning. Fit the perches into the frame and add the nest boxes. You can place feeders and drinkers on the floor of the coop in front of the nesting boxes if desired

    • 5). Seal all the wood with a wood preserver or paint if desired. Once this is dry, the front can be added and fixed to the 2x4 supports. Cut a door in the center and construct sliding doors to enable the coop to be closed off when the birds are roosting at night if desired. Also leave a window space, covered by mesh for safety, near the top of the coop for ventilation.

    • 6). Add outside perches at the front for the birds and mount the coop high enough and clear of other structures to give safety from cats or other predators. For pet birds an aviary can be added to the front to give the birds an outside area, but for wild birds for whom you are providing nesting space only, the front can be left open. If you think it necessary, the front doors can be closed at night for extra safety while the birds are roosting.
