How to Expedite Lost Luggage Claims

    • 1). Contact an airline agent immediately if you cannot locate your luggage from the baggage claim area to prevent further delays in locating the lost bags; there may be a chance that your luggage has already arrived, but was delayed or withheld in storage.

    • 2). Fill out a lost baggage claim. Do not leave without completing all form information. Make copies for yourself and be sure to submit the lost baggage claim immediately to ensure that luggage will be located without delay.

    • 3). Describe the lost luggage, including special tags, ribbons or even a tracking device that is attached to the luggage. Also describe luggage contents as accurately as you can. Your luggage can be recovered more quickly if you describe it precisely.

    • 4). Ask for compensation. Domestic airline companies are liable for delayed or lost baggage. Under the 1999 Montreal Act, international airlines are required to offer their customers compensation for lost or damaged luggage for up to $3,000. If your luggage has not been found after two weeks, communicate your compensation rights to the airline.
