Sunday - A Day of Rest

Our country and society in general has changed a lot over the last 60 years.
Many of the things that were held sacred in years gone by, today, no longer hold any value to a lot of people.
In many ways this has lead to the detriment of our country and the values we all had at one time.
There is nothing wrong with change, change is good in many ways, however, change for the sake of change is not good, and there are always certain values and customs that should never change.
Our observance of Sunday, the seventh day of the week is one of them.
There was a time, unless one performed a vital service, no one would think of working on Sunday.
The whole Christian world came to a stop on Sunday morning, to be resumed again the next day.
Believe it or not, it was hard to even find a restaurant open, as most people either went to church and/ or did family things afterwards.
This normally involved a family dinner around grandma's table.
There really wasn't much need of a restaurant being open on Sunday.
Then slowly, things began to change, people, because of being a little more prosperous, began stopping at a restaurant for Sunday dinner, before doing their family activities later in the day.
This was probably a good thing because families were still involved in some activity as a unit.
But, soon things began to change.
Suddenly, shopping malls were open on Sunday, enabling people to shop and enjoy the afternoon mall hopping, not a bad thing, but it did draw people who needed to work out of the Sunday family routine.
Gradually we began to move away from a practice that had keep families together for many, many years.
This can probably be justified as these people are performing a service by being open on Sunday, there is some justification to it.
Not a perfect situation, however people have a choice to not work in a profession if that is an issue for them.
From there things naturally evolved into a situation where it is common practice to work on Sunday.
In today's world, more and more people hardly even know it is Sunday, it has become a normal work day for most people.
They think nothing about reserving it to spend time with family and friends.
It has become harder and harder to not work on the Sabbath.
This is not a road we should be going down for a couple of reasons.
The first reason is that it is unhealthy and unproductive.
The body and brain needs at least one day of rest every week to re-nourish and refresh itself.
The bible itself states that on the seventh day, God rested.
This is for a reason, it was to remind us humans that all work and no play makes man a dull person.
We need recreation and communication with our fellow souls to refresh the mind and provide new ideas and thoughts.
Businesses would be well advised to give it a break, give people Sunday off, they can travel on Monday morning and work longer hours four days a week to makeup for lost time.
One company in the restaurant business that gives their people Sunday off is Chick-fill-a.
Judging by the crowds at their restaurant the other six days a week It doesn't seem to have hurt their business at all.
The second and most important reason is that by working on Sunday it takes away from family time.
Now many children never see their parents together, and if they do it is very seldom and then they are watching tv with a precooked meal on their laps.
Sunday dinners and family time have gone the way of the buggy whip.
This surely has been a contributing factor in the present state of our social environment.
There is little an individual can do to change this present situation, except change it in his or her own family, by doing so we can set a good example to our circle of friends, in this way it would spread across the land and would be a factor in turning our social ills around.
It couldn't hurt anything.
