Gender - A Fabrication Of Society

103 15
What is gender? Is it an illusion or is it something true? Already in the uterus, if not pre-conception we are being divided into tight leash boxes known as male or female.
From the very start we are being treated differently, taught differently and told to act differently and aim for certain things in life and to simply give up other things.
Basically we are taught that sex and gender is the same thing and the social norms are non-negotionable.
If a female acts male she is either a tomboy, a lesbian or not raised right.
If a man acts female he is either transgender or gay.
That is what society tells us.
When it comes right down to it why must we work so hard to maintain the rules that are tying us down and limiting us? I for one would like to know what the so called female attributes and male attributes are.
Who is to say that something is strictly male or strictly female? For when we are born are we not all the same inside? We all have yet to discover who we are, what we like or how we define ourselves.
Therefore should we not work together to experience as much as possible in order to find out who we are rather than only experience what is considered to be allowed within the gender that society claims we must belong to? Of course there are differences between those who are male and those who are female but rather than focusing on our differences why don't we either focus on how we are alike or simply stop trying to forcefully define and explain everything? For example.
A woman is said to have a biological clock ticking away furiously while men are said to be able make a child at any age.
Even though it has been scientifically proved that men too have a biological clock (at a certain age risks for diseases increases and fertility decreases) women are still the ones feeling the most pressure from society to have a child while men aim to live life and spread their seed.
Not all but the majority.
On that note might I add that a woman wanting to adopt a child is considered loving, natural and noble even and her effort is welcomed.
A man who wants to adopt on the other hand is considered to be either mentally deranged, gay, a sick pedophile or all three.
How about a transgender man then? Is he supposed to deny his gender and act like his sex assigned at birth simply for the ability to adopt? The se gender boxes truly make no sense.
We are who we say we are, not whom society claims we must be.
The women out there who dislikes feminine things, are they supposed to force themselves to? The men who doesn't act like cavemen, who takes care of their appearance, who likes shopping for clothes and whatever other cliché of what women do, are they supposed to deny who they are and what they like because they are told they're not supposed to? It is the "barbie doll vs toy truck" scenario all over again.
Can't we all just say screw the rules and like what we like confidently instead? It is so annoying when we are told to look and act a certain way to "pass" in society when in reality, if we were all to be ourselves that so called ideal person wouldn't even exist.
There are so many amazing and beautiful people in this world.
I say we stop trying to keep the smallmindedness society promotes and aim to think free and let people be.
It is like the current pope says.
Who are we to judge? If you haven't lived that person's life - every step of the way - and felt all that they have felt you cannot possibly pass judgement on how they have acted or what they are like today.
We must try to be understanding, see that we are all different and unique and have faith that the world will still be here tomorrow, regardless of how groundbreaking you think that person or persons' actions and choices are.
I hate to break it to you but there is a first for everything.
I say we keep our eyes and our minds open and work to find out who we are with no restrictions and no holding back.
I for one will not let society define me.
I am androgynous, kind of in the middle, always have been and always will be.
I will end this post with a famous Dr Seuss quote.
"Be who you are and say what you mean because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
