When talk about dragons western people will come out a bad impression on them. The dragons are often features as evil as brutal, bad-tempered and ignorant who will kill and eat human. While dragons are given the different figure in China, Chinese people like it very much. When you close to Chinese, you will find the dragons related things are presented among people's daily life.
People's cloth will decorated with different dragons, the paintings will painted with vivid dragons, even people like to name "dragon" after family name. Go to the Chinese handicraft store, you will find a superb collection of beautiful things about dragon. Such as the embroideries willed embroid with vivid dragons; some Chinese paper cuttings also will be cut with dragons and so on. Why the dragons are so popular in China?
There are 56 ethnic groups in China, but different ethnic group has their own totem. While a common totem for all of Chinese is dragon. According to the legend, dragons are the divine animals that help people a lot. They help the poor people who would die for lacking water. Therefore, the dragons are worshiped by people.
The emperors of ancient time were usually called "dragon", and dragons represent royal and authority. If you have ever visit the spot of Forbidden City which were build for the emperor in old time in BeiJing now, you will find pillars that supported the roof are decorated with dragons.
The Chinese dragons are as a symbol of auspicious power in Chinese folklore and art, they are the embodiment of the concept of yang [male] and associated with the weather and water as the bringer of rain. Chinese people also believe dragons can bring them luck. The beautiful, friendly and wise image will not change in Chinese mind.
In some important festival of China, people also like perform the Dragon Dance that is a special and delicate performance of arts on the street or in some public places to pray bringing good luck and prosperity, like perform in Chinese New Year, Dragon festival. It is also perform at some shop opening ceremonies.
