How to Become an Umpire in Texas
- 1). Purchase uniform garments required by the TBUA. At a minimum, you need a navy blue TBUA cap, a navy blue pullover umpire shirt, a black leather belt, black socks, heather gray pants and black shoes.
- 2). Attend the TBUA Umpire School. Contact the TBUA vice president for the most current scheduling. As of 2010, this school was free to attend. Attendance is mandatory.
- 3). Fill out the registration form to join the TBUA and pay the registration fee, $15 as of 2010. A pre-scheduling fee is also required at sign up, $25 as of 2010.
- 4). Attend general meetings as they are held. The TBUA will notify you when meetings are scheduled. Typically, there are five to six general meetings a year.
- 5). Review the applicable rules before umpiring any games. The TBUA schedules umpires for games. High school games use the National Federal of State High School Associations rules, known as the "Federal" rules. All other leagues use the MLB rules.
