Treating and Preventing Wrinkles

Treating and preventing wrinkles can slow down, and in some cases even retard aging skin.
With consistent care, you can retard the severity of wrinkles and improve your appearance.
The Cause of Wrinkles: Wrinkles are primarily caused by unprotected exposure to the sun, and the best protective measure is using a sunscreen with a good antioxidant formula.
You can prevent or retard aging skin as long as you start early with the consistent use of sunscreen.
Use sunscreens with a 15 or greater SPF whenever you are exposed to the sun, and they must be formulated to protect from both UVA and UVB rays.
Effective Product Types: The most effective products for skin coverage to ward off damage caused by UVA rays contain either chemical or physical agents, or both.
The chemical agents responsible for protection against these rays are avobenzone or Mexoryl.
The physical agents responsible for protection against these rays are either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
Use products with these agents in a large enough percentage to be labeled as an active ingredient.
How to Improve Skin Appearance: If you already have wrinkles you must focus on reversing the collagen damage done by the sun.
This can be accomplished by plumping them up in order to smooth the skin out.
The only ingredient found to effectively reverse the cellular breakdown is Vitamin A.
Vitamin A is most effective in its prescription form of Retin A and to a lesser degree in its non-prescription forms of retinoids such as retinol.
These Vitamin-A derivatives are clinically proven to speed up the cellular turnover rate and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
When topically applied, they perform in a much more effective manner of exfoliating dead skin cells than manual exfoliation, and are effective with repairing collagen deep in the skin.
Aside from certain lasers and cosmetic procedures, retinoids are the one and only family of ingredients that will actually make a difference in the depth and appearance of wrinkles.
You can obtain good products at your favorite drugstore for a cost of less than $20 for a tube of anti-wrinkle cream.
Other cosmetic ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids and antioxidants can also help to some degree, and they will be addressed in a future article.
We will then proceed to discuss other cosmetic procedures such as laser treatments that are performed in the dermatologist's office.
