Requirements for a Journalism Master's Degree
- To apply for a master's in journalism degree, make certain you have all the necessary prerequisites required for application. You will need to complete your bachelor's degree, preferably with a major in journalism, international affairs, political science or another related subject. Your bachelor's transcripts will need to be sent to graduate schools. You can expect to be required to submit letters of recommendations and an admissions essay. You may be required to submit GRE or other testing scores.
- Master's degree programs typically take one to two years to complete, depending on the program. The first classes you take will be in your core curriculum areas. These include classes on media law, media in society, the history of journalism and communications and society. These classes provide the foundation for a professional journalism career.
- You will have to declare a concentration area at some point during your coursework. Once you complete your core curriculum courses, you will focus in the remainder of the program on your particular area of interest. If that is broadcast journalism, you will take classes focused on producing, writing and appearing in live media. If you are interested in international journalism, you will take classes on foreign languages, policy and government.
- Many programs will require you to complete a summation project or thesis paper to graduate. This project or paper demonstrates that you have mastered the skills and knowledge to be a journalist in your particular concentration area. You might have to present your project to a panel of faculty members, who will determine whether you are eligible to graduate with the degree.
