    Container Size

    Planting

    • Plant daylilies in well-drained soil approximately 18 inches apart, or one per container, in smaller containers. Do not bury the crown, the point where the foliage meets the roots, more than 1 inch below the surface of the soil. Water well.

    Daylily Variety

    • Daylilies grow 18 to 24 inches tall, but also come in miniature and dwarf varieties. Each variety has numerous flower shapes and colors. Miniature varieties will look better in smaller containers.

    Care

    • Daylilies require little care. They bloom better with regular watering, and periodic application of fertilizer. In the fall, most daylily leaves yellow, and die back. When the plant is dormant, you can divide your daylily, if necessary.

    Bloom Time

    • Daylilies bloom in the summer months. Although they bloom profusely, each flower only lasts one day.

    Where to Buy

    • Most local garden stores sell daylilies in the fall, but they are also available from catalog and online plant sellers.
