How to Decorate Long Hallways

    • 1). Paint the two short walls at each end of the hallways a warm, dark color, such as orange or tan. Dark, warm colors make a hallway look shorter, as opposed to light colors, which give the illusion of space.

    • 2). Paint the two long walls a bright, neutral color that contrasts with the two end walls. It's important that these walls are kept light because the hallway would appear narrow and claustrophobic if all of the walls were dark.

    • 3). Carpet narrow hallways with a horizontally striped carpet to increase the appearance of width. Alternatively, sand and varnish bare floorboards or paint them a light color of your choice. Vertical stripes should be avoided because they will elongate the hallway.

    • 4). Install wall sconces to ensure that every part of the hallway receives an equal amount of light. Install one at either end of the hallway and another in the middle of the opposite wall. Wall sconces also add decorative detail to the wall and act like pieces of art.

    • 5). Choose sets of paintings and hang them in groups at intervals along the hallway. Alternate the walls they're placed on, hanging bigger pieces opposite doorways to create a striking impression when people walk though. Arrange photos in groups and hang the sets in groups along the hallway.

    • 6). Place a bookcase at the end of the hallway if the room is wide enough. A storage basket or a small table with a phone on it also works. This serves as a focal point in the hallway and increases its function.
