    Length

    • Commissioned officer training for those in the health care field lasts five weeks. During this time, you'll go through physical conditioning five days a week and also take classes to prepare for military service. On days you have physical conditioning, your morning will begin at 5:15 a.m.; otherwise, your day starts with breakfast at 6:30. In the evening, personal time starts at 11 p.m, with mandatory lights-out at midnight.

    Course Content

    • During this course, your classroom time and hands-on activities will cover skills in six areas--drill and ceremony, health and fitness, communication skills, profession of arms, military studies and international security studies and leadership studies. The largest part of the curriculum is devoted to leadership studies, as you'll be leading teams in the field as a commissioned officer in health care.

    Facilities

    • All health care professionals in the Air Force are trained at the Jeanne M. Holm Center for Officer Accessions & Citizen Development in Alabama. You are required to live at this facility while training, and you'll likely share a room with another trainee. The training center also includes a dining facility and free laundry facilities. Some weekends, you may be granted permission to leave the campus, at which time you must stay within 120 miles of the base.

    Continuing Eduation

    • Air Force health care professionals receive continuing education through funded education units and training. There are programs for physicians, nurses and dentists, as well as options for you to become a mentor to new health care professionals in your field.

    Financial Aid

    • The Air Force Financial Assistance Program provides aid for residencies so that students can complete their medical training and worry less about money. You can receive more than $45,000 toward your training plus a monthly living stipend during each year of your residency, and upon completion, you'll be obligated for a year of Air Force service per year of aid. You can also apply for the Health Processions Scholarship Program if you don't yet have your degree but are considering joining the Air Force.
