Sleep deprivation is a condition that occurs if you don't get enough sleep. It occurs if you have one or more of the following:
1. you don't get enough sleep
2. you sleep at the wrong time of the day
3. you don't sleep well
4. you have a sleep disorder that prevents you from getting the sleep you need, poor quality of sleep
Sleep deficiency can lead to physical and mental health problems, injuries, loss of productivity, and even a risk of death. Sleeping is a human need and is a vital part of good health and well-being throughout your life.
Your ability to function and feel well while you are awake depends on whether you are getting enough quality sleep. Sleep deficiency can interfere with driving, social functioning, work, school. You might have trouble focusing, functioning and reacting. It can also make you feel cranky, frustrated and irritable. Lack of sleep poses many problems to a person with normally a healthy diet. Chronic sleep loss can disrupt blood sugar levels and causes the body to produce more ghrelin (hunger stimulation). You may be more likely to overeat and your food choices won't be nutritious. People are usually drawn to sugars and carbs for a quick pick me up. Your brain metabolizes sugars at a slower rate when you're sleep deprived. Studies have shown a connection between sleep deprivation and obesity. Sleep deprived people have double the risk of obesity.
There are both short and long term effects of sleep deprivation. Excessive daytime sleepiness is one of the main effects, which can lead to traffic accidents.

5. Work injury
6. Irritable
7. Forgetfulness
Here are some long term effects:
1. depression
2. stroke
3. obesity
4. heart problems
5. high blood pressure
6. poor quality of life

The best treatment for sleep deprivation is more sleep. Each of us has our own sleep needs, and the amount of sleep we need differs throughout our lifetime. Sleep that is poor quality may occur in sleep disorders such as insomnia or sleep apnea.
