5 billion devices are connected to the Internet.
There are even a few 19.
9k modems still pulling down data like it was 1994.
What if a group of techies or old school nostalgic types went on a flea market spree around the United States looking for as many 19.
9k modems they could find? Created 'The 19.
9k Club'.
Could they develop a super modem by linking them all together? Connect the super modem to the Internet and pull so much bandwidth that the other 12.
5 billion devices would lose connection strength? What would the 'handshake' between a super 19.
9k modem and the Internet look like? "We connected five thousand modems, reached out into the web sphere and said, 'hey, nice to meet you.
'" What would the local ISP or cable company have to say about a super modem? "We can't support that thing.
" By 2020 it's estimated as many as 50 billion devices will be connected to the Internet.
A chain of modems reaching around the globe couldn't compete with that.
It would be good for 'The 19.
9k Club' to drop the modem experiment, start a fundraising drive and raise some money to update their equipment and join the 21st century.
Taking that club fundraising drive to the web would make the most sense.
They could start with a simple DSL connection and one device.
Today that's potentially connecting to 12.
5 billion minus 1, other devices.
Just about double the population of the world.
But just creating a page and releasing it to the web is not enough.
Without any sort of marketing or communications about your fundraising effort, the chance of someone seeing your page and donating, would be almost zero.
Yet, if you had an infinite amount of time to raise the money you needed to raise, eventually, like a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, like 'Moby Dick' - Infinite Monkey Theorem - enough people would find your website and donate to your cause.
But you don't need a monkey with a keyboard and all the time in the world as your only means of raising money.
This is the world of web 2.
0 and people are connecting in new and inventive ways everyday.
Social media has introduced a brand new paradigm for sharing and connecting.
Tell one Facebook friend about your club fundraising drive and within minutes an entire community will know about your fundraiser.
Innovative companies are developing tools and creating online fundraising platforms that tap into the potential of social media, web and funds processing to help people raise money fast and efficiently.
You don't need a monkey tapping on a keyboard for infinity to raise the money you need to raise to support your favorite cause - even if your goal is to string a chain of 19.
9k modems around the world.
Online fundraising platforms are taking all that's good about the web and placing that power at the tips of your fingers.
