What Is Heartburn It is irritation of the esophagus by stomach acid.
The lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, keeps the stomach acid in the stomach and away from the esophagus.
The LES opens to allow food into the stomach or to allow people to belch.

Stop smoking - smoking induces the production of stomach acid and also damage the esophagus making it more susceptible to stomach acid.
Another lifestyle change to make is to eat in smaller portions.
Eating large portions can increase stomach pressure, causing acidic stomach contents to splash back into the esophagus.
