Organic Gardening - A Beginners Guide

Organic gardening is really popular these days because many people want to avoid using pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
If you grow your own vegetables, for example, it is incredibly satisfying knowing that you are producing delicious home-grown food that hasn't been sprayed with anything.
So let me introduce you to the concept of organic gardening.
Some of the easiest things you can grow if you are a complete novice are herbs.
If you have some outside space you can put them in a sunny part of your garden or in containers, and if not you can simply put them on the window sill indoors because most herbs are relatively small.
You don't need to grow huge quantities of herbs because most people only use a very small amount when they cook food or add them to their dishes.
It really is very satisfying adding your own home-grown herbs to your food, especially when they are totally organic because they will taste even better.
Let's talk more about outdoor gardening now because this is what most gardening beginners are most interested in.
The first step is to prepare some earth by digging it or hiring a machine.
You should be aware that if the land is overgrown and hasn't been used to grow things before, then you may well need a machine.
Otherwise you can simply use a spade.
The next step is to start planting.
This is where it gets a little harder because you need to plant certain things at certain times of the year.
However the good news is that whatever time of the year it is, something will always be in planting season.
You just need to do a little bit of research.
It is of course best to plant something that you will benefit from in the future, whether it is a beautiful flower or a tasty vegetable.
If you are just moving into a new property, one of the first things you need to do in your garden is to identify which plants are already there.
This is fairly easy if you have a gardening book to hand, or if you have access to the internet, although you may well have to clear away some weeds in order to actually see all of your plants, particularly if the previous owner has neglected it.
Then you can plan what plants you can add to this garden.
Your first year as an organic gardener is always a very exciting one.
You will see new plants coming up as the months go by, particularly as you get closer to the spring months.
You may even discover new plants that you hadn't even noticed before.
If you are serious about becoming an organic gardener you will of course be avoiding chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
However you also need to be planting organic seeds as well.
These are widely available online and from your local garden store.
Gardening can be a really exciting and rewarding hobby, particularly when you first take up this hobby, which for many people is when they move into their first property that has some garden space.
It not only keeps you fit and healthy, but it enables you to enjoy the great outdoors and get plenty of fresh air.
It will also give you great pleasure when you grow your own fruit and vegetables.
Plus if you have an interest in organic gardening, it will also be immensely satisfying because you will be helping the environment at the same time.
So if you are still thinking about taking up gardening, I highly recommend you do so.
Yes the weeding and general maintenance can be a bit of a chore, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons.
