FAQs About Egg Donation

While many people understand the basic ins and outs of sperm donation, the process of egg donation is a bit more complex, and many are not as familiar with it.
Here are some frequently asked questions about this interesting subject: Who Can Donate Eggs? Typically, being able to donate eggs requires that woman pass certain basic requirements (some of which are legally determined).
Some facilities, however, may have additional requirements.
For example, nearly all facilities require that the woman be in her twenties to early thirties.
This age range is chosen in part due to the fact that women in this age range tend to respond more easily to the fertility treatments that egg donors are required to complete in order to donate.
Also, eggs of older women may have irregularities or abnormalities which aren't desirable in the donation process.
Some facilities also prefer donors who have donated in the past, or who have already had their own children.
What Is The Approval Process Like? The approval process for becoming a donor is very involved, as one might expect.
There are usually several initial consultation appointments, physical exams, and gynecological exams.
The doctors will also need to know a complete medical and family history, and may also require blood and urine tests.
Finally, nearly all facilities also require a psychological evaluation.
The process may seem to be a stringent one, but it has been carefully designed in order to ensure that the egg donation process is completed successfully, and that the eggs have the highest chance of being used successfully to help another woman conceive.
Some facilities preface these screening strategies with an over the phone interview or a mail in application in order to save both the facility and the donor time in determining their eligibility.
How Are Donors And Recipients Matched? In some cases, recipients actually request a certain donor, like a sister or friend.
Typically under these circumstances the donor must still go through the required screening process, as the process is there to help make success a greater likelihood.
In other cases, the recipient may choose the donor based on a list of details related to the donor's physical characteristics-many recipients opt for donors who most closely resemble themselves in terms of race, complexion, eye color, height, and hair color, in order to have a child that closely resembles her.
Some programs allow recipients to request IQ tests, childhood photos, or other information to help make their decision as well.
Do Donors Remain Anonymous? This is up to the facility, the egg donor, and the recipient.
Some facilities do only anonymous donations, and offer no other options.
Some facilities allow alternatives, which the donors can agree to if they so desire.
For example, they may say that the child that results from their egg can be given contact information for the donor once they reach a certain age, they may be willing to meet the recipient ahead of time, and some donors stay in touch with recipients.
