Mobile Storage Cabinets Pros and Cons

Most businesses and consumers want flexibility in laying out their office and working space, however with most cabinets once their nearly full of their contents they become heavy which makes them difficult to move.
One solution to this problem is using mobile storage or file cabinets, which allow you to move cabinets around as your business grows.
Most weekend warriors want to tackle their storage needs by making all their cabinets mobile.
Some individuals don't care about the safety or look of the cabinet as long as it rolls and will compromise the integrity of the cabinet by putting it on a moving cart.
There are many things wrong with this concept of putting a metal cabinet that can handle 150 to 200 lbs of weight per shelf on top of a cart, especially when the cart may be made of wood or you're unsure of its stability.
When you put a substantial amount of weight on a caster system, you should make sure that the wheels can handle the load as well as the overall structure of the dolly.
When a caster can't handle the weight of the item it's carrying, there is potential for tipping which is a definite safety hazard.
Casters come in various materials as well as sizes, with features such as breaking systems, swivel and rigid.
Typical 5" caster wheels can be made of Urethane, Thermo rubber and even Steel.
If you need a large platform it's recommended to have wheel brakes, swivel casters on the ends and rigid casters in the middle of your platform cart.
If you have a heavy duty flatbed cart that can handle weight make sure the depth and width are sufficient for the height of the cabinet you're making mobile else the cabinet will tip.
For security purposes making a cabinet mobile can also make that cabinet at a greater risk for theft but by adding some kind of locking mechanism for the wheels or holding bracket you will deter any thieves from rolling your cabinet away.
If you insist on using storage or file cabinets that you already own and want to convert them to mobile cabinets, try making your caster base out of 12 gauge metal opposed to using an existing dolly that may be too large or small for your particular cabinet.
It's recommended that 1 to 2 inch angle iron would be preferable with solid welded beads throughout the armature to ensure the integrity and strength to handle the cabinet's weight.
If your budget isn't as tight or if you don't have the time to convert your existing cabinets to mobile, try purchasing mobile storage cabinets online.
There are various designs of mobile cabinets available today as well as sizes, capabilities and colors.
Mobility in cabinets can be found throughout various storage cabinets, wardrobe cabinets and combination wardrobe and storage cabinets, just take your time on the right cabinet for you and your particular needs.
