Having sagging eyelids tends to be a problem that creeps up on us as we age. It is true that only a surgical procedure will give you a long lasting improvement, there are several things that are easy to accomplish that will really improve the look of your eyelids. Correct application of eye makeup and a wide range of over the counter treatment products are available to help you.

Sagging eyelids can be cleverly disguised by careful application of your eye makeup if you know what you are doing. First of all, it is important to understand how to draw attention to the line of your eyelashes and away from your eyelids. Use an eye shadow all over your upper eyelid, from the eyelash line to your eyebrow. Select a neutral shade that will give a very natural impression. A strong black eyeliner line should be avoided, instead apply a soft grey or brown close to the lashes and smudge it to soften the effect even further. Finally, a really good mascara which will add volume and length to your lashes should be applied.

Eyelid surgery is growing in popularity as a way of treating the problem of sagging eyelids. Blepharoplasty which is the most commonly done procedure is now ranked third in the US for the number of cosmetic procedures performed in a year. Whilst there is a large number of people who have no wish to subject themselves to a cosmetic surgical procedure, there are lots of other alternatives. Here are some inexpensive home treatments you can apply.

1. If you rub your eyes because of irritation, allergies or tiredness, sagging eyelids will become worse. It is a good idea to try to ensure you get enough sleep. There are many natural techniques for helping you to relax prior to bed time, read up on some of these and try to apply them.

If irritation or allergies are the problem, try to find the source and treat appropriately. It could turn out to be something simple, like changing the brand of your laundry detergent or stopping using a particular skincare treatment. Allergy testing is an option if the problem proves more difficult to resolve.

2. Always try to avoid getting dehydrated. Drink an adequate amount of fluid every day, cut down on salty snacks and foods.

3. Pamper your eyes with natural treatments at home. You will find natural remedies such as raw potato or cucumber slices applied to the eyes or cold tea bags or a chilled gel pack eye mask will all help the eye area. Chamomile tea bags are particularly effective at reducing puffiness and creating a tightening effect.

Whilst nothing could replace cosmetic procedures for the long lasting effects it provides, regular use of simple tips like those outlined above will really help.

You should also protect your eyes from damage from the sun as this is a primary cause of skin slackening as we get older and which makes the problem worse. Always protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses and an eye cream with a good spf level. Sagging eyelids may be inevitable but it is certainly an inevitability that we can delay without spending a fortune!
