    • 1). Plant horny goat weed in mid- to late-April in South Carolina. The plant is hardy from USDA Zones 4 through 8, and will grow easily anywhere in the state. Choose a location for containers or planting in the ground that will receive dappled light or full shade for most of the day. Under a tree is ideal.

    • 2). Mix equal parts potting soil, sand and peat for excellent soil drainage. Fill containers or amend garden soil with the mixture. Moisten thoroughly with water and check that water drains quickly and easily away.

    • 3). Plant horny goat weed seedlings 12 inches apart, tucking their roots into the soil and tamping it down with your fingers to close air spaces. Water again after planting to reduce transplant shock.

    • 4). Allow soil to dry out between waterings once the plant is established, usually after three to four weeks. South Carolina summers are hot and humid, so fewer waterings may be expected. Very little maintenance is needed after this point, as horny goat weed is drought resistant and has few insect problems.
