What Time of Year to Plant Grapes

    Time Frame

    • The best time of year to plant grapes is the early spring. Plant after the frost and as soon as the soil is easy to work. Grapes need plenty of sun and well-drained soil that is sandy or rocky. Plant in a southern exposed area with a slope, if possible, because grapes need plenty of water.

    Significance

    • Look for plants that are well-developed and have a good root system. Trim off any long or broken roots. When planting, make sure the hole is wide enough to spread out the roots. Plant 3 to 5 feet deep and 6 to 8 feet apart. After planting, water the vines well. Keep the roots moist for the first month until they establish themselves.

    Effects

    • It's important to check the leaves to see if the grapes are getting enough nutrients. Dark green leaves are healthy. If the leaves are not healthy, add compost around the base to enrich the soil with nutrients.
Build a trellis to support the vines. You can make a trellis out of wood and wire, or some people use PVC pipe in 10-foot sections with wire strung across for extra support.

    Benefits

    • Pruning is essential for the fruit to grow, but do not prune the first year. Let the root system grow strong. Prune in February or March before the vines begin to grow. Trim shoots that grow to the side and trim back the new shoots, so the main vine is strong. Trim off any winter damage.

    Considerations

    • Before growing grapes, consider what you will use them for and the area of the country you live in. Visit your nursery and talk with the experts about the best kinds of grapes. Concord grapes are best for the East Coast, and Vinefera are best for the West Coast. Because correct pruning will yield good crops, it is advisable to research the subject as well as talk with people who grow grapes in your area.
