    The Written Test

    • 1). Choose the type of CDL you will be applying for. There are three classes of CDL licenses: A, B, and C.

    • 2). Choose what endorsements you need, if any. Endorsements allow you to drive specific types of vehicles. Endorsements are not required to get a CDL but may be required for your commercial driving job.

    • 3). Download the Georgia Commercial Driver's Manual. Visit the Georgia Department of Driver Services website and click the Commercial Driving tab. This manual has all the information that is covered on the CDL and endorsement written tests and acts as your study guide. The written portion covers such subjects as how to properly inspect your vehicle before trips, proper signaling techniques and the proper amount of space to leave between yourself and vehicles on the road.

    • 4). Take a practice test online. Most sites charge you for taking a practice test, but a few sites, such as Georgia DMV offer short practice tests for free.

    Skills Test

    • 1). Find a training program for your skills test. The skills test checks your ability to apply the knowledge from the written exam in everyday situations. You can train for this portion through a truck driving school or vocational program. To make sure you are properly prepared for the skills exam, choose an approved CDL school from the DDS website.

    • 2). Prepare for your pre-trip inspection. During this test, the examiner follows you through an inspection of the inside and outside of your vehicle as you run through a proper inspection. You must demonstrate that you know how to complete an inspection of such items as fluid levels, gauges, and emergency equipment.

    • 3). Prepare for the basic vehicle control portion. This test is done in a course marked with cones and tests your ability to perform basic functions with your vehicle. Some of the items in this test include straight-line backing, parallel parking, and backing to the left or right.

    • 4). Prepare for your on-road driving test. This final portion of the skills test takes you out on the road where you must demonstrate proper driving procedures. You examiner will watch for proper turn procedures, curve handling and gear usage.
