How to Store Strawberry Plants Over the Winter

    • 1). Cover strawberry plants growing outdoors in the ground with 4 to 6 inches of loosely laid mulch, such as straw or leaves. Apply mulch after the ground freezes ½ inch deep, but before temperatures drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2). Move container grown strawberry plants to a cool, but warmer location, such as an unheated garage or shed. If temperatures are still too cold, regularly below 20 F in this new location, or you can't move them because they're too heavy, proceed to the next step.

    • 3). Cover container grown strawberry plants with 6 to 8 inches of straw. Apply after the soil freezes 1/2 inch deep.

    • 4). Cover strawberry plants growing in barrels or large pots with burlap that remain outdoors to protect them further from the cold, especially in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6 and below where subzero temperatures are common. Weigh the burlap down with heavy objects, such as bricks, or stake the burlap into the outside perimeter of the soil so it doesn't blow off.
