    Early-season Tomatoes

    • Certain tomatoes should be planted earlier in the season to ensure that they will ripen by the latter months of the year. These tomatoes include the Early Grey, New Yorker, Oregon Spring and Siletz. These tomatoes provide both size and good flavor and are quite firm to the touch. They are also the most seedless. Plant these tomatoes as early as the first of May.

    Midseason Tomatoes

    • Midseason tomatoes are best to grow right at the end of spring. They blossom and bear fruit quickly and do better in the slightly warmer conditions of the early Oregon summer. The best midseason varieties of tomatoes from Oregon include the Celebrity, Heinz 1350, Royal Flush and Willamette. These tomatoes are softer but often considered more flavorful then most tomatoes, especially when combined with wine and cheese. These tomatoes should be planted around the beginning of June.

    Cherry Tomatoes

    • Cherry tomatoes are also prevalent in Oregon. These mini versions of normal tomatoes are about one to one and a half inches and have sweet to sharp, almost spicy flavor, depending on what type of cherry tomatoes you buy. The Presto, Oregon Cherry and Small Fry are some of the favorite cherry tomatoes from Oregon. These tomatoes can be planted at the end of June and will be ready by the end of the summer, since they ripen more quickly than larger tomato plants.
