Cleaning a toilet is an unappealing yet necessary household task. Commercial cleaning products are loaded with man-made chemicals that can have adverse effects on families and the environment. Although organic, non-toxic cleaners are commercially available in health food sections or stores, using homemade products has the same benefits with less cost. Making the mixtures is easy and takes less than five minutes.

    Vinegar

    • Vinegar is a natural product that results when microorganisms turn sugars into acetic acid. Distilled vinegar is useful for cleaning around the house, including the toilet bowl. Pour approximately 1/4 a cup of vinegar into the toilet bowl, scrub with a brush and flush away. To better combat stains, combine one cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of baking soda and let sit for a couple of minutes. Scrub with a toilet brush and flush away.

    Borax

    • Borax is a mined, natural mineral. It is useful around the house, including to clean the toilet bowl. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of borax into the toilet bowl, scrub with a brush and let sit for at least 30 minutes before flushing away.

    Disinfecting Cleaners

    • Following an illness in the house, use cleaners with more disinfecting properties. Mix 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide with 1 cup of filtered water. Or mix equal parts of isopropyl alcohol, vinegar and filtered water. Spray or pour either cleaning mixture into the toilet bowl, leave to sit, scrub and flush away.

    Other Home Items

    • Other household items that are not meant for cleaning toilets are toilet safe and effective. Pour a can of cola into the bowl, leave to sit for an hour and the acide content of the soda will flush stains away.

You can also use denture tablets. Boil a kettle of water and pour the boiling water directly into the toilet water but avoid hitting the porcelain. Sprinkle in ground or cracked up denture tablets and allow them to foam. After the foaming has subsided, scrub the sides and flush away.

You can also add ecologically safe dish-washing liquid to the alcohol/vinegar/water mixture described above. The bubbles and foam created from the soap may require an extra step of rinsing after scrubbing and flushing.
