What to Wear to the Gym
- Wear clothes that give you a full range of motion. You don't want your motion to be restricted when you work out. If you wear clothes that bind you too tightly or flow too loosely, you place yourself in danger. Loose clothing can catch in weight machines, and tight clothing can cut off the circulation and feeling to your limbs. Shorts, tank tops, T-shirts, sports bras and sweat pants fit snugly without impeding your movement. Also, consider what colors you'd like to wear. Light colors reflect heat; dark colors absorb it. Wearing light colors can reduce your risk of overheating.
- According to the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Weightlifting," your clothes can have a psychological effect on your performance. For example, baring the parts of your body you're working, such as your arms, allows you to see your muscles flexing and extending so you can focus more thoroughly. Also, you can see the muscle grow slightly over the course of a workout.
- Many gyms have a dress code. Dress codes exist to ensure your safety first. You also have to take your own modesty into account. When you pick clothes to wear to the gym, make sure they have no holes exposing too much bare flesh or are too threadbare. If you wear a tank top, pick one that doesn't fall open too much in the front or in the back. If you're a woman, you should wear a sports bra under your tank top. If any article of clothing hikes up or falls down and exposes your body when you go through a workout motion, leave it at home.
